Tropic Days & Aussie BBQ

So Sunday was a chill out day for me. I was tired  from the diving on Saturday and a little sunburnt on the backs of my legs. I decided to have a day chilling out in the hostel. Tropic Days, Cairns is located slightly out of the centre of Cairns. Takes around 20 mins to walk from the hostel to the centre, they do run a shuttle bus as well.

Full info can be found at http://tropicdays.com.au

It truly is a small bit of paradise and the owners have been running it since 1997 so know what works. For myself its comes with everything I need and more.

  • Fresh linen and towels
  • Unlimited tea and coffee
  • Pool
  • Plenty of hammocks in a grassy green lawn to relax.
  • Good showers and loo’s
  • Good Kitchen and large fridge
  • Free Wifi

They also have famous weekly BBQ with kangaroo, crocodile, emu and fish on Mondays and on Thursday all you can eat Pizza Night. The BBQ last night was fantastic and worth the $12 as it was an experience and there was more than enough food. I very much enjoyed ‘skippy’ [Kangaroo] also it was great to try croc and emu as well. Croc tastes of a mix of fish and chicken but a bit chewy.

I’m assured by an Aussie that the BBQ was up to scratch by Aussie BBQ cooking regulations, i.e not burnt and that Gabriel is a good Chef! He’s the owner and cook in the pictures below, very friendly and helpful.

The Pizza night is pizza’s from pizza hut and yep I stuffed my face till I couldn’t move and you get a beer as well all for $10 happy days.

As you can see from the pictures its a worth the $22/£14 per night. The ‘Free’ meal is a little disappointing but its food and for $5,7,8 you can upgrade to something better than spagbol or chilli con carney. This is provided at a local pub in town.

I would highly recommend this hostel and can see why it has a high rating, like all hostels there are some nosier residents but thankful this is kept to a minimum as staff don’t put up with it.
