We Will Remember Them.

So Today I was up at a reasonable time and headed to the National War Museum. I headed to it up Anzac Parade which is probably similar to ‘The Mall’ in London. Down each side of this wide road were memorials to honour the fallen in the many different wars that Australia has been involved with. This leads on up to the main War memorial and museum.

Firstly its free to visit all the museum and even the guided tours are free as well. I tagged on the back of a tour that had just started. We were shown the Roll of honour for all the wars which can be seen in the pictures below. The names are only in alphabetical order and contain no rank, as in death all men are equal. WWI and II were the largest and they have every solider up to current wars, Iraq and Afgan, these lists are updated on 11th November.

The tour then entered the main hall which has stain glass windows and 4 murals which depict the 4 services, Army, Navy, Air Force and Medical. In the middle of the floor is the Unknown soldier who was recently returned from northern France. He is there to represent all the Unknown soldiers who have fallen.

Next it moved inside and below to a massive museum covering all the Wars, each had displays and interactive sound and video. It’s the most impressive display of military memorabilia that I have ever seen. Everything from uniforms to actually enemy aircraft, submarines and vehicles. They have HMAS Sydney Bridge there and a helicopter you can jump in and experience what it would be like in a Vietnam landing.

Needless to say it took all day to see the museum and I didn’t have time to read and see everything. Its a very moving place and somewhere everyone should visit.

I headed home after 5pm when they kick out from the museums here and went and did some bloging in the shopping centre before dinner and then watched a film after on the laptop before headed to bed about 10pm, thinking I should get a good night’s sleep. Well almost bang on midnight I was awoken to a familiar sound! Yep the fire alarm, so out, dressed and grabbed my important rucksack and headed down to see the fire and rescue again. After 10 minutes we were allowed to return and so then I got to bed.
